Thanks, I really appreciate that! I love hearing that people are enjoying the stories – it always gives me a lift to go start the next one. And thank you A TON for introducing them to your brother and to other people. Seriously, that’s the best way for people to find out about them, so thank you!

I am a 59 year-old guy who cannot get enough of your Peter and Dill adventures. I have to stop reading the stories in bed because I laugh so hard it is keeping my partner awake! I had a best friend when I was that age and we had some great adventures – all in our imaginations, of course, but to us they were real and exhilirating. Thank you for the engaging stories and the nostalgia it brings up for me. Oh to be 10 again!
    Jon

    • darrenpillsbury says:

      Hey Jon,
Thanks so much for the kind words! I definitely wrote the stories trying to create a childhood I never had. I guess I should be thankful for that to a certain degree – the vampires and werewolves part – but I would have loved to have a partner in crime like Dill. I’m glad YOU did! (Or maybe you were Dill? Haha! You troublemaker, you.) Thanks again for writing in – I really appreciate it!

Good afternoon…I am a 50 year old teacher who cannot get enough of Peter and the…books. When is Peter and the Kindermord coming out? It’s been too long since your last book.

  5. Michelle says:

Hey I’ve been waiting soooo long for #25!! I’ve got to get my Peter and Dill fix!!! Those stories just sucked me in and I was reading reading reading and ignoring most everything else. I get such a kick out of Dill. I really appreciate your style of writing, thanks so much. Now, get back to work, I WANT MORE!!!

  6. darrenpillsbury says:

Hi Suzanne and Michelle! Sorry it’s taken me awhile to answer you. I’m finishing up Kindermord now, on April 22nd…I’m hoping to have it out on May 1st. Thanks to both of you for reading the books!

  7. Darien says:

    Hi there,

I actually downloaded your book by mistake but wow, seriously happy that I did. I have since become addicted like so many
others people that wrote on your site. Considering that the protagonists are nine and a half this is hilarious. Very very well written and without a doubt one of the most riveting collections i’ve read. Like Jon, I am glued to it. I got the whole series! Keep writing!

    • darrenpillsbury says:

      Hi Darien!

I’m so glad you downloaded the book by mistake! 🙂 And I’m really, really glad you enjoyed it so much. Thank you for taking a chance and reading it – and thanks for buying the whole collection – and thanks for writing in, even though I was a terrible author and took seven months to write you back!

My hands are jittery. My eyes are shifty. I am shaking uncontrollably. I am mumbling to myself, “Need Peter. Where is Dill”. I am like a drug addict going through DT’s here! I can’t wait for the next story in the Peter and the Monsters series!!!! Come on man, I need my fix!!! No, seriously, I LOVE your books and even though patience is NOT one of the things I am known for, I am waiting on the edge of my seat for your next book!!!! I am practically doing the Pee Pee dance!

    • darrenpillsbury says:

      Hey Lisa!

Hahaha – I am TOTALLY putting ‘the Pee Pee dance’ in one of the future books. I think Dill will be doing it (naturally).

Sorry it took me so long to answer, but hopefully your DT’s (Dill tremens? 😀 ) got sorted out with Peter And The New Best Friend, which came out in April 2014. I don’t know exactly when it will be ready, but get ready to jones again for Peter And The Zombies, #28!

Thanks for all the kind words – and thanks for reading my books!

      Darren

  9. Holly says:

    • darrenpillsbury says:

      Hey Roxy!

Haha – I think we ALL want to be cool like Gwen, even the guys. She’s a total badass with the guns.

I guess now that Peter is getting all ninja-y and Dill has the werewolf thing going, it’s up for debate, but she’s still super-cool.

You probably know by now, but I released Peter And The New Best Friend in late April. Hope you enjoy(ed) it – and sorry I got back to you so late!

Thank you for all the kind words, and thanks for reading my books!

I’ve been checking iTunes every day this month to buy Peter and the New Best Friend but am not finding it. When is it coming out?

  12. Tyler says:

Why aren’t there more books? I’ve pretty much lost my purpose in life without Peter and the New Best Friend.

    • darrenpillsbury says:

      Hey Tyler,

Well, now you’ve definitely got it back since Peter And The New Best Friend came out in April!

Or at least you got it back for awhile, until Peter And The Zombies comes out…

Thanks for reading the books, and thanks for writing in!

      Darren

  13. Adam says:

    Hi.
Darren I realy enjoy your books, and was wondering when peter and the new best friend will be available. Thanks and looking forward to your new book.

  14. Sebastian says:

Hi I am 11 years old and i would like to know since the first 28 books were one year in Peters life and you plan on making only 60 books wouldn’t the years in the books be cut down to 2 to 3 stories? And when will PETER AND THE ZOMBIES come out?

    • darrenpillsbury says:

      Hi Sebastian!

Good question. The plan right now is to fast forward in Peter’s life about three years when I reach #35.

So, Peter’s first year in Duskerville (Dead Men to Elves) was covered in books #1-26.

Peter’s second year in Duskerville started in #27 (New Best Friend), and will probably continue through #31.

The next four or five months in his third year in Duskerville would be covered in #32-34.

Then, once we skip ahead – probably to when he is 15, that’s my best guess – the next couple of years will be covered in #35 through 60.

Why am I planning this? Well, the stories aren’t selling as well as I’d hoped, and I can’t make a living at writing them, so I can’t devote as much time as I would like to them. To reach 100 (my original goal) would probably take 40 more years at my current rate.

Also, there’s the issue that I really, REALLY want to tell some of the stories coming up soon (stories #29-34 are going to be really dark and pretty awesome). But if I put 10-12 stories in each year of Peter’s life, it would take me another 5 or 6 years (in my own life) to getting around to writing them. And I really don’t like waiting, so I decided to cut out the fluff and write the stories that I’m really looking forward to telling.

That’s the main reason for all of this. I’ve got the stories planned for #28-34… and I’ve got the end of the series more or less planned… I just don’t know everything I’m going to do from #35 to about #56. But I figure I’ve got awhile to figure that out.

Thanks for reading my books, and thanks for writing in!

      Darren

PS – I hope to have ZOMBIES out in the next 2 or 3 months.

  15. Colleen says:

    Hi Darren,

I discovered your website by accident and interested in reading your books! I am really happy to find you and reading some great books (as you have a great comments from your loyal readers). I am curious though, do you also do your own artwork? It’s really cool.

    Thank you,

    Colleen

    • darrenpillsbury says:

      Hi Colleen,

Glad you found the books, and thanks for reading!

Yes, I do the artwork for the individual books, #1 through Zombies. The only exception was #16, Grownups, which was just a stock photo.

Another artist did the covers for the collections (Volumes 1 – 5) – the colored backgrounds with the white goopy silhouettes of the wolf, the bat, the severed arm, etc. Then I couldn’t afford him anymore, so I started doing those, too.

Thanks again for reading, and thanks for dropping me a line!

      Darren

  16. Michelle Darlington says:

    Hi Darren!
Sorry to have to ask again about Volume 8, but I’m really missing my fix of Peter and Dill. Will you be putting Volume 8 out soon?
Keep up the good work it’s an awesome series! 🙂

  17. Samantha izod says:

Hi I’m a bookaholic and I’ve just devoured all the stories and I’ve been itching for your next book please publish it soon I’ve been waiting since the last book the topic of the Jehovah’s Witness is really itching me please tell me when can I expect it to come out

  18. Michelle says:

    Hello!

Come on come on already! I’ve been waiting sooooooo long for the next book. I’ve read the series 3 times now while I’ve been waiting. I just love the characters you’ve created in these books. It would be really cool if they were turned into a movie or tv series. Mind you, if a movie it would be a whole series of movies. I think it could be just as successful as Harry Potter. But that’s just my opinion, not that anyone asked me. I have two 14 year olds and they have read them all as well and we talk about them and work bits and pieces into our every day experiences and roar with laughter. It’s pretty cool that we can all talk about them together. So thank you for that. The interactions between the 3 kids is fantastic. I need my Dill fix, NOW GET BACK TO WORK! (jk).

    • darrenpillsbury says:

      Hi Michelle!

Wow – you’re a dedicated fan! Thank you so much!

Yeah, I wish I could get it made into a TV series – something on basic cable or HBO, so they wouldn’t interfere with some of the darker aspects of the story. Unfortunately, TV series and movies of children’s books only get made if they’re insanely popular, and Peter is far from that at the moment. Some day, maybe.

Say hi to your 14-year-olds for me! I’m glad they’re enjoying the books, too!

By the way, PETER AND THE PAST just came out! Be forewarned, it’s pretty dark and very sad… but it will have a complete look back at Grandfather’s entire history.

    Hi Darren,
Sorry to hear you say your books are not selling, I find it hard to believe. I have read all the peter series and am kind of stalking you waiting for the next one to come out. I have never laughed so much as when I came across peter and Dill. I have had dome strange stares while I’m reading a giggling at what they get up to, they make my day. Please release your next one.

  20. Ted crosby says:

    Helol Darren,
I just want to let you know that I love this series of books. I am 50, and must say that you have created some great adventures, that are fun to read.
Do you have a date yet for volume 31 yet.
Thank you for all your dedication to this story line.

    Ted

  21. Steven Scott says:

Are you still releasing volumes or have you switched to just releasing individual stories? I’ve been itching to start Peter and The Elves but would prefer to have them all in a single volume (as far as I’m concerned, any extra I have to pay is worth it).

    • darrenpillsbury says:

Hi Steven! Yes, I’m still releasing volumes – I’ve just been extraordinarily slack about doing it. I’m writing #32 (#31 should be coming out in a few weeks), but after I get the first draft done, I’ll go back and put together ZOMBIES Volume Eight (and probably BIKERS Volume Nine at the same time). Sorry about the long wait!

      • Lloyd Davis says:

This is great news! Glad to hear that Peter will not stop with #30. I absolutely love these books. Please keep them coming.

  22. Sary says:

This series captivated me more than Harry Potter ever did. I am currently on PETER AND THE ZOMBIES and I have to say that this is the best series I have ever read. (I’ve been trying to slow down my reading until #31 comes out because I don’t want to run out of these too fast.) My favorite part about these books is the power to go to school and say things like “Hey, I just finished reading a book about a family that eats raw deer meat who also turn into birds and eats people be killed by a 10-year-old werewolf that wears a magic moon necklace,” and then of course tell my friends what series it is so they can check it out. My other favorite thing is the relationship between Hiraki and Melissa. Whenever they have a conversation, I just have to laugh. It’s hilarious! Thank you so much for writing these books. My only concern is my Kindle weirdly being glued to my hand when I read these; I literally can’t put it down. I wonder what the problem is.

    • darrenpillsbury says:

      Hi Sary!

Hahaha – I’d never thought about that, about being able to say, “Hey, I just finished reading a book about a family that eats raw deer meat who also turn into birds and eats people be killed by a 10-year-old werewolf that wears a magic moon necklace.” I’ve gotta admit, that sounds kind of cool.

I’m really glad you’re enjoying the series! And thank you for telling other people about Peter. The books have struggled financially over the years, so you telling folks about them is the nicest thing you could do for me. Seriously, thank you!

And I’m glad you like the conversations between Hiraki and Melissa! One of the most fun conversations I ever wrote between any characters ever was the awkward dinner conversation where Hiraki first comes to stay and Melissa is trying to figure out why the heck he’s there at the table.

Bikers (#31) is coming out soon – hopefully within a week – although it’s short, so…

But the good news is I’m already working on #32.

Fair warning: #30 (Peter and the Past) is rough. Really rough. Super dark. So… just be prepared. Maybe save that one for a weekend where you don’t have to quit reading at night to go to bed and be up early for school.

      Thanks again for writing in!

      Darren
